John Hancock Maynard b.1865 Collingwood, Australia:
Origin:
Born in County Stratton, Cornwall, England about January 1830, he emigrated to
Melbourne, Victoria in 1856 and lived in Collingwood until his death in 1904.
Occupation:
Carpenter.
His Marriage:
John married
Jane Joliffe from Stratton, Cornwall, England, born about 1824.
They were married on 5 September 1850 at Stratton, England in the Wesleyan
Methodist Association Chapel by Reverend R. Brickwood.
Emigration to Australia:
"Mr. and Mrs. Maynard arrived in c.1851 on the ship
Himalaya."
Port Phillip is the old name for the area now known as Victoria. The
record does not say where the ship came from; it could have come from another
port in Australia though it is most likely the journey he took with his wife to
emigrate to Australia.
(Source Hughes: "Passengers to Port Phillip from
Commonwealth and foreign ports" Passenger List 1838 -1851 - Paper H):
Searching for records in Victoria in early 1850's is Difficult, as in 1851
Victoria was declared its own state and became self governing. Prior to that
records for Port Phillip and other southern towns were listed under New South
Wales.
