General Notes: The Maynard's of Stratton and Launcells were mostly shoemakers (cordwainers) and mariners (Richard was an apprentice bookmaker who worked the coasting trade in the summer) but their lot was a hard one.

The Feb 17,1843 newspaper "West Briton" reported:" the spirit of emigration continues active in the neighborhood of Stratton". High rents, heavy rates, and obnoxious and impoverishing taxes were driving them away.

Some from the Stratton district chose Canada West (now southern Ontario) and this is where Richard and Hannah immigrated to(Bowmanville, Ontario).

Richard set up shop in Bowmanville until 1858 when he sailed alone for the gold fields of British Columbia.

He returned for his family in 1862 and all moved to Victoria.

The trip to B.C. was by schooner from New York down the east coast to the Panama isthmus.

From here they rode the Panama Railroad to the Pacific coast; then by ship, the Sierra Nevada, to San Francisco and on to Victoria.

General Notes: Married and settled in Malvern. He and Mary owned a couple of townhouses which allowed them with the success of their take-away business, to move onto a larger home.

Lived at 19 McKay rd, Rowville from 1962 to 1979. Built a 'modern' brick home on a 1 acre block when Rowville had only three small housing estates in it and it was beyond the limit of the established city. One of the first to use a concrete

slab. Some thought it risky so only the living rooms were on a slab.

The house contained many feature decorations of the early 60's such as annodised aluminimum coloured light-fittings, marble tile entrance, internal gardens. The house had a large full length balcony area which drew around to the four car

carport, that was later closed in and become their workshop for lamp shade manufacturing.

Moved to Keysborough in 1979. Lived in 3 bedroom cluster home off Lower Dandenong Rd for 10 years. They continued to run their business from the garage and one room.

After Reg was diagnosed with Parkinsons and became slowly ill, plus Mary being disabled through an unsuccessful knee operation, they moved to a Special Accommodation unit at Patterson Lakes for 2 years.

Reg spent his final years at a unit in East Bentliegh with Mary. They were taken care of by his sister Irene and brother in law Bernard until he was finally placed in care in Sandringham.

Laurie and his wife Joyce lived in Middleborough Rd Box Hill while bringing up his family. This covered most of the 50's and 60's while both Geoff and Robyn grew up, married and moved on.

in the early 70's, he later built a home at 5 Kardinia Drive, Macleod, where only his youngest son Roger and wife remained. This was on a particularly steep corner block of which he created the most fantastic honey-comb rocked landscape with

multitudes of plants and flowers filling every pocket to produce a most amazing landscape.

In the early 80's, Laurie built their retirement home in Mornington, a rather grand brick home of about 24 squares and all the features he had wished for.

He had spent the majority of his working career at Bostik where he finished as HR manager.

Laurie also had a passion for the Stone Masons of which he kept the solemn word and supported their causes, plus many other community causes. These kept Lauire and Joyce very busy, particularly in retirement.

Unfortunately, time took its toll on Joyce and they later moved to a retirement village where they had their own unit and space, but also services to support them.

Their final home in the early 90's was in Cheltenham at a freindly retirement centre, where Laurie saw Joyce leave him and a few years later he followed.

He worked for Webb's Radio as their leading TV Salesman for about three years. He moved onto John James in Elsternwick and then to Macon and Sons. With insufficient challenge and opportunity, he established Cambridge TV as the General Manager

and earned good money ($90 pw in 1970) but worked six days a week and every third Sunday.

During the '60's they lived in 39 Brooke St, Oakliegh South (1963); 255 Jasper Rd, McKinnon (1965); 8 Hillview Crescent, Rowville (1971).

Rowville was their first home and they built it new. It was an 18 square brick-veneer home with carport, off-set on a large 1/3rd acre block. It cost $14,800 to build in 1971-1972 and the land was $3,100 purchased in 1970. The house included

soid brick feature walls and shag pile carpets. The land was large and was quickly filled with trees and gardens though the soil was hard and clay.

It also had unmade roads, no phone (12 months wait), half-hour walk to the local store and only 1 in 3 blocks occupied.

The mortgage taken was for $11,200 at 7.75% for 30 years at $80.98 per month.

He registered a business 'Global Appliance Rentals Pty Ltd' around 1971 and opened up a TV rental business in Hampton St, Hampton. This was his greatest achievement as the business grew very quickly and provided a very good income for the

family.

During the early 70's Irene became very depressed due to the isolation of the home at Rowville. In 1973 the family moved to Hamption, living on top of a chemist shop in what was a very comfortable apartment with a balcony looking west (over

the bay).

The business grew and he ventured into Hospital Rentals which was very lucrative (a set cost $10 per month to buy and rented for $3 per day).

In June 1975 he created Paddy's World; a combination of electrical retail, toys, carpets and a major takeaway business. The retail side did not perform well but the takeaway had takings of $3,000 per week in 1976 (a cappoccino sold for 50c).

After difficulties, Paddy's world closed in July 1976. The result of trying to sustain this business included selling the family home in Rowville, his boat and almost everything else. He almost lost Global Applicances except for generous

supporters in Phillips TV who kept him trading and organised an investor to restructure his business.

After this time, the family moved to Grenville Street behind a large home owned by Italian Australians who became life-long friends.

He continued with Global in a small refurbished Hampton shop until a change of business direction took place. On 19 AUG 1986, he registered Bernie Dirscoll's Handyman Service and as he moved out of TV rentals after selling most of his

customers to a competitor in Sandringham, he became a well-respected tradesman.

In the meantime, he and Irene moved to 2/43 Lansdowne St, East StKilda to restart their future. They later oved to East Bentliegh with a shop for the hospital TV rental business and the handyman business. They stayed for five years, and during

this period, his brother and sister in law Reg and Mary moved into a unit opposite from which Bernie became their offical carer.

He continued with this work for the rest of his working years until retiring in Junourtoun near Bendigo, VICTORIA.

Here he built the dream home that he and Irene had always wanted. A monster of a 2-storey brick house, A frame with very high cathederal ceilings and two self contained units flanking each wing. All this on 3 acres.

Joined by Mary after Reg had passed away, the three lived in harmony with the area.

This was to be his resting place, as he suffered a heart attack and passed away 24 hours later with his direct family beside him. He was buried in Bendigo cemeterary on a hillside after a beautiful service in the local Bendigo Catholic church with a service by an old family friend Father Peter.
